Everything Wes says has proven quite true with my Jeep. I've never driven a noisier vehicle yet after 3000 miles it is still going strong. When I put a canvas top on it the sound seemed to intensify which makes sense. At speeds above 35 it really howls! I doubt that soundproofing was of any concern to the designers at Willys so lacking evidence to the contrary I've tried not to let the noise bother me.
I've learned the hard way how good my dad's advice was of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it...." Often watchful waiting is the best (and least expensive) course.

Alright, I'll take everyone's advice. I'm putting it away in the garage for right now, it's snowing heavily and I got a beater for the winter. In the spring there are plenty of local car shows in the area, and several are just for jeeps, so I'm sure I'll meet plenty of people. I got an impact driver, and will pull that rear transfercase cover and check the drive gear next week. _________________ 1952 M38A1
