Posted: Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:49 am Post subject: A1 CDN2 Rear fender well measurements and/or drawings
My A1 CDN2 is as released in June 87. The rear tub floors and fenders were replaced/rebuilt just before release, along with most everything else (there's a story that goes with the unit about the rebuild/auction/original buyer). Everything is in place except for the hand throttle, fording cable, and the heater for which I have the parts in a box. It runs like a champ but...
The rear fender wells are too long. The seats, in particular the passenger seat, sit up against them and are leaning forward a lot. See attached images.
You can see the extension welded to the passenger seat leg. The drivers side is also up but only about a half inch (you can see the rubber standoff).
I was wondering if there are any dimensional drawings of the fender wells with measurements? I think I can adjust the front ends to stock without ripping the entire fender wells out. If I have to take them out completely, then I might as well carry on and put proper replacement panels etc in.... Which means I'll be jeepless for at least another year

probably a side shot with teh seat tipped up would tell a bit more, can compare the positioning of panels. It is also possible that the front legs are bent on your seats to give more leg room thus pushing the seat into the wheel well. _________________ Carievale Saskatchewan Canada

Some photo host sites require you to use a specific link they provide when wishing to post a photo from there on another web site. Also when using IE by Microsoft the right click and copy URL doesn't work. You must right click and open "Properties" then copy the URL listed within the properties and then post that URL between the [img] brackets. _________________ Wes K

That leg extension is three inches long. There is no evidence of the seat being bent. You can see the wear mark on the wheel well where the cross bar on the seat sits just below the ID plate.
The wheel well is 35.5 inches from the rear to the front edge. I could only find measurements for a CJ5:
"From the toolbox up to the bend at the seat belt is 7.25", from the seat belt to the top is 6". The fender well is 32" long and 11" high and about 10 3/8" wide."
Except for the length my wheel well is roughly the same assuming the "seat belt" is the bend). Math is not my strong point but it appears that if I move the length back to 32" and assume the rest is good, the seat will sit properly, assuming the measurements are the same for the A1.
My drivers seat is also up (that rubber spacer in the original picture) and bolted flush to the wheel well, where the 3B I have in my garage has a spacer on the bolt between the seat and the wheel well, as well, the leg has no spacer between it and the floor.
I don't have an M38A1 anymore so I don't have the exact measurements for the wheel house but I have a few photos that illustrate the matching angles of the seat backs and the front end of the wheelhouse.
The driver's seat doesn't have any extensions other than what is shown.
Your photos show the seats deliberately raised to left them forward away from the wheelhouses which I believe was done because the mechanic that rebuilt the wheel houses made them too long.
In the mean time back to the dimensions questions perhaps a member with his A1 tub on the shop floor can fill in the dimensions for us:
