I had the carb and fuel pump rebuilt on my 56 M170. It ran flawlessly for about 40 miles, then it started missing, and has been getting progressively worse. I thought maybe the carb float was stuck, so I took off the top, All OK. When I went to put it back on, a piece fell out of somewhere. It looks like the end of a pen, hexagon-shaped with a needle point. Where in the heck does it go? My manual is missing, so I cant tell.

On another issue, are there any stores that stock an elongated spark plug socket. I cant find one long enough that fits over the socket sleeve. About 1/2" too short.

Sounds like the float needle. It rides on the tab of the float to regulate the gas flow to the bowl

You'll have to go up in the price range away from the stores to secure a long deep socket that will clear the spark plug's barrel. Like on line with OTC or catch the Snap-On or Matco truck.

The float needle falling off while you were juggling the top of the carb (called the air horn) is not uncommon and may have nothing to do with the running problem you are having.

The Ord 9 parts list and the carb manual are both on our downloads page for free PDF downloading.

I bought several of the WW II type spark plug sockets and I use them after I found that none of my deep sockets would clear the shielded spark plugs. Very few people seem to be aware of these but I found a picture of one in the 1944 Willy's MB/GPW TM and then I found a set of four of them for sale on E-bay for next to nothing since no one knew what they were. I can't find a picture right now so I'll describe as best as I can: The socket is stamped out of sheet metal and above the body of the spark plug it steps down but is still large enough and long enough to clear the barrel of a shielded spark plug. The top of the socket is then rounded off like a dome. The top and bottom sections of the socket are both hex shaped and the top is 3/4" across the flats IIRC. It fits the shielded spark plugs perfectly and you can grab it with a box or OE wrench or a socket. It does NOT have a hole for a cross bar or a square hole for a socket wrench, you have to drive it using something on the flats of the top section.

Ah, found a picture of one on E-bay. Let me see if I can attach it. There's two in the picture. The 3rd and 4th from the RH end.

PS sorry for the huge picture. It came from E-bay so I have no control over it. These sockets seem to be plentiful on E-bay, there's at least four or five complete auctions with some in them. Several auctions contain more than one. Here's the search string that I used "spark plug "socket" (vintage, jeep, military, WWII)". Note: use double quotes to be sure that E-bay only returns items that have socket in the title or you'll get a bunch of E-bays NOT-SO "related" items!

Joe I took the liberty of reducing the file size of that photo so folks with regular screens don't have to keep scrolling left to right to read a sentence. It's best to keep photo file sizes down below 200K when linking them to a post.

I also opened an album for you in our members photo gallery so when you find a photo like this you can load it there and use the the automatic sizing feature to select a smaller size to link here.

Here's the link to your new photo album:

There's a tutorial here as well:

Thanks Wes. I've been meaning to ask for an album. Still trying to figure out how to post pictures and get the size right. It's strange that that picture was less than one screen width on E-bay but much bigger when I posted it here. Evidently every website does it's own image shrinking and the images display differently even with exactly the same file!

BUT the one thing that I have figured out is that file size and image size don't always correlate. For example, PhotoShop will let you specify the image size and also the "quality" of the picture. The lower the quality, the lower the file size. It actually controls the compression of the JPG file; the lower the "quality", the higher the compression and the smaller the file sizeand also the image quality.

BTW can you tell me what's up with the underlining and similar features? On most forums you can highlight a word and then click on underline and it will underline it. But on this forum, if you do that it puts the control string at the end of the message! Here you have to start the underline, then type the word or phrase and then turn off underline and then type the rest of the message.

PS: Wes, how long will pictures stay in the albums? One problem that I've noticed on this forum is that a lot of pictures were linked from outside sources and are now gone. Steel soldiers insists on uploading all pictures to their server and now I see why!

Actually the photo you are viewing and decide to link will not always be the same file size that you were viewing.

and requires the use of the bracketed selections above the dialog box by first clicking the desired function ahead of the spot where you wanted then insert or type the content you want to be affected by the bracketed selection then click the second time and it will then envelop the selected content. The newer versions just feature a one click option. We would love to toy more with the attributes of this web site but Ryan and I are jeep lover, he's a veterinarian & I am a airplane mechanic and neither of us is a computer geek or programmer. We have posted an ad to our 2000 members for help if anyone of them is a computer geek but so far no one has climbed aboard.

They stay here in their album as long as they are germane to our topic "Willys M series jeeps" and the album shows activity.

The photos that get lost are usually on another separate storage site and either the site dies, dumps the photos or the owner deletes the photos. For example, many of my posts from about 2002 thru 2010 lost their photos both here and on the G503 boards. The reason for that was I was using "MyPicGallery.Com" for those years and one day with no notice the web site shut down and dumped about 2000 of my photos. It has taken me this long just to start to catch up with the same level of completeness in my photo album here like I had on the old storage site. It was a pay as you go site and they never made good on any of their debts.
