I just got done replacing oil seals in my transmission and transfer case. The felt seal in the front of the transmission is a compression felt seal. after I bolted on the cap ( the piece the throw out bearing is attached to) it was very hard to turn. Am I correct to assume this will turn more free after the jeep has ran down the road? I'm also curious to how much grove is acceptable on the companion flange and the front yoke, before it needs to be built up and turned down. I'm trying to head off any leaks the best I can before I assemble my M38. Suspension kit is to come next week and I'm very excited.

I wonder if this is the right felt seal? It looked thicker than the original. All the drawings show something that more resembles what would go around the yoke and companion flange, thickness wise. This seal looked liked it was double stacked. After reading the guide, I think I can get away with 200 grit then 400 grit. The grove is ever so slight.
Thank you for the info Wes.
The topic has come up here before. I believe the solution was buy thin felt stock of the correct or closest thickness and cut your own. _________________ Wes K

I had the same issue with the felt dust seal that was included in the transmission repair parts I got from Novak......I just used an Exacto knife to slice the seal in two and put one half in the transmission and the other half in a ziplock bag and labelled it "transmission dust seal"......on the off chance I'm still alive if the darn thing ever needs replacing again. _________________ Jim
