Hi Wes,
I'm new member from Quebec, Canada and at this time I'm looking to retrieve CAR #52-30428, it served with my Father during his training at CFB Bordon On. Canada in 50's for RCAMC. This Willys is very special because it's a stretcher bearer ambulance. At this time I don't know serial #. Would you check in your Data base if this Willys exist today? I have project for it.

Thanks for your help
Jean or John. Smile

Hi Jean,

I watched in my list and I don't have this CAR number 52-30428. Many M38CDN don't survived any longer after their career in Canadian Forces and maybe this jeep no longer exist since a long time ago.

You can try to find this number on the Maple Leaf Up website which is specially dedicated to the Canadian military vehicles and their history: http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/index.php

Cheers

hello,

I may check with Brian Asbury if you can. he may be able to shed some light on it too.

I am curious, Guy, do you know the contract numbers for those two jeeps you listed? Also, do you have anything listed for CARs above/below F-10229?

thanks

thanks Guy very much. I have a list as well that is what i submitted to wes for the sight....do you mind if I add this to that list as well? Wes/Ryan can figure if they want to use it or not, but I maintain the more information for the M38 CDNs, the better for everyone who wants to learn more about it.

Thank you for the link on the maple leaf site. I have been there before and did not find much about the M38 CDN, although it was good to see familar names. your link lead me to one conversation Brian had about it which was very useful.

http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=23222

scroll down and read about Brian A. and what he wrote about the contracts and CARs.

I share my list with pleasure and needs to be upgraded with all M38 enthusiasts.

Cheers from the East.

thanks Guy. and cheers from the west to you too as well!

btw, for Black Eagle....there is a individual from Ontario by the name of Rob who was editor of the Ontario Military Vehicle Association. May someone can help point you to his contact as his was on my old computer that crashed. Anyway he told me to look at the back of the data plate for grease pen markers that were done by inspectors...it might have the serial with the CAR/CFR on it. Also, he also maintained that if the unit passed inspection without any issue, there was the possibility that there was a specific number sequence between the serials and CAR/CFR. He may be able to get that to you depending on his database and CAR?CFR list. another good source.

Hi Guy,
Thanks for posting your list. May I make a suggestion that you revise your date of delivery format: you list as Day-Month-Year while the data plates use the format Month- Day - Year. This is very confusing for a reported date of for example 8- 11- 52.
It is very easy to make mistakes with numbers and the original source is important. The most comprehensive list of numbers was published by Rob Grieve, in CMP Magazine Issue 13, May 1996. He gave full credit to his sources: either his own inspection, to Colin Stevens in BC, to the MVPA Directories or to historical photos. Nearly all M38CDN data bases quote heavily from Rob's work.
A couple of quick notes: F-100009 actually is dated 2-22-52 (I have this plate and the date was a typographical error in Rob Grieves original list). Also the last M38, F-102135 was very unlikely to have a stamped date of Nov. 27,1952. While this date was the last day of production as reported by Ford, the "date of delivery" was always a few days or weeks after the vehicle was actually made.
... Brian

Hi Brian,

I agree and I changed the list. Thanks for information about Rob and his list. Is he still present on MLU Forum?

Cheers

Guy: Rob G. is still interested in M38's but doesn't post on forums.
Reddog: my experience is that first few 300 or M38CDN's did not have the CFR number stamped on the frame however I have seen a small inspector stamp (like on the data plate) stamped on the top of the front left frame: pretty hard to spot given that this area is often damaged or rusty. Otherwise the only way to known the CFR a number for an early Ford serial-numbered M38 is from a body stencil or surplus bill of sale.

I am interested when the "639" contract ended and the "742" contract started and whether this is related to the procedures for stencilling or stamping the CFR number. The contract number is on the serial plate.
