I came across a restored 1950 M38 with a rear pto? Would this have been original to the vehicle?

If the factory didn't add it would then the military have added it?

It's possible and it's just as possible that a post military civilian owner added it.

I have been wrenching on these jeeps since 1970 and today I still cannot say with 100% accuracy that any part was there originally from the factory.

Only a handful of M38's came from Willys with a PTO and winch. Those that did have a dash model weight and serial plate with the phrase w/winch on it.

Over the last 53 years (over a half century) there has been thousands of opportunities for thousands of civilian owners to add PTO's to their surplus M38's for any of a dozen purposes.

This US M38 came without a winch & PTO.

A US Built M38 that came from Willys with a winch & PTO would have had this plate.

Many folks agree that M38 CDN's all had winches & PTO's but that they were added in the field by the Canadian Military.

Yet look at this M38 CDN Plate:
