M38 Tires
Photos and identification information provided by Jim Kelley and Keith Buckley, edited by Ryan Miller.
M38 vehicles produced from 1950 through 1953 by Willys Overland Motors for the United States Military were equiped from the factory with Goodyear or BF Goodrich rubber tires that used a rubber tube for inflation.
The tires had exterior markings molded into the tire to indicate the year of manufacture and the manufacturer's name along with inflation directions.
The tire tread was a NDCC (Non-Directional Cross Country) with a more rounded tread edge than the previous WWII tire design.
Valve stem protectors as those used on the earlier WWII jeeps does not appear to have been a factory instillation for the M38 (as of the current information available).
Split "combat rims" (rims that are bolted together from two halves to aid in changing a tire in the field) also appear to not have made it into production with the only references to a "combat rim" being found in the prototype M38 vehicle manual.
