transpixel Broadcasting from an open cane field to enemy Japanese and civilian hold-outs in caves on Saipan, 1944. Here shown testing his speaker system, Lt. R. B. Sheeks USMC (Intelligence Officer and Japanese Interpreter) , had to keep his microphone away from his jeep's mounted speakers to avoid feedback noise. The custom features of this one-of-a-kind jeep were designed by Lt. Sheeks, and fitted out by personnel at the military motor pool operations in Hawaii (Camp Tarawa) while preparing for the Saipan campaign. Specifications included two forward hood mounted speakers, radio amplifier, a gasoline powered electric generator, and a "snorkel" exhaust pipe for amphibious landing use.
