A reasonable move if compressions were all good, vacuum test gauge readings were good, fuel pump flow and pressure are good and fuel bowl setting (float setting) in carb are correct. Otherwise you may have more testing and changes coming.

If you have an extra generator pulley just disconnect the generator from the belts. With the extra pulley on a steel rod or pipe free to spin use it to maintain belt tension without the generator.
