Having been on several USGS survey's in the 1970's in Colorado where we used Surburban's the question is best answered by who knows? Peoples memory falter's unfortunately.

As for my dad's memory after retiring 3rd in line at USGS after a 35 year career that spanned the globe I'll take his word for ...

Not sure this helps but my dad worked for USGS and I'm sure knew your dad! My dad was in charge of the computer science division.

The only vehicle my dad ever mentioned that they used were International Scouts. He hated them as he said when they went out into the field (usually out west somewhere ...

Got a price today of $2.95 a gallon for 100% gasoline @ 87 octane. Fuel source is probably Exxon as the station is Exxon although the Pure Gas pumps are separate from the regular gas pumps and include off-road diesel.

For reference $2.95 is about 60 cents more than the lowest priced 87 octane 10 ...

I appreciate the advice!

The engine runs perfect which is so unusual for a jeep this old from my experience. There are lots of aviation, off road and farm tractor fuel sellers around here so fortunately getting gas of some kind should not be a problem. Finding specific oils will take some work but ...

I knew an older gentleman who did the same thing in the mid 1960's. He bought his M38 in Richmond, VA at a surplus auction and drove it home. That must of been about a two to four hour drive at that time in a jeep. He had it parked in his yard for years.

While working on my M38 I found FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY stenciled across the top front of the Kelly hard top. My top is a variation of the Kelly Series 200 tops. I have an M38A1 that has a Sears aluminum top.

I used to think these were just civilian additions till I found the stenciling. That ...

Thanks Wes! I will look for the AVGAS!

I agree! It is the best running engine I have ever found in an abandoned vehicle I hate to mess with it!

RMC Engine

I have a like new RMC engine that while covered in dust runs great and has great power. Oil pressure is normal at 40lbs.

I would like to drive my M38 often. But, it has not been regularly driven probably for decades.

I can get ethanol free gas from a Pure Gas station but beyond that it there ...

What I meant was I have never come across a stand alone USMC M170 manual from the 1960's devoted exclusively to that vehicle. The other M170 manuals I already know, but thanks.

The 1966 USMC M38A1 manual I have referenced is from Quantico and a field service guide listing part numbers and part ...

Although rare, there is a parts manual for the 1960's USMC M38A1 vehicles published not by the Army but by the Marines in 1966.

It is not comprehensive.

I have never seen any M170 manuals from the 1960's.

You can find what you want from just about any vender as NOS.

Those vehicles were built similar to the early 1960's USMC M38A1's. Unless you can find a 1960's M170 parts manual, the only way to come close to verifying the correct part specifications is to find the 1960's USMC M38A1 parts manual ...

Dzus (pronounced Zeus) quarter turn fasteners (supplied by Shakespeare Products Company, probably a distributer) are used in the 0607 Plate (gauges)and SEM's (current trade name) fasteners are used in the 1804 Body Panel (dash).

The language in the parts manual is overlapping and interchanged for ...

For the record NOS radiators are still available and sell for around $400 to $500. The hardest part is finding one.

I would keep a Nekaf as a Nekaf. At least in the states they are not that common and have a lot of details better suited to modern traffic than the original M38A1's.
