Check the PCV valve and line to the PCV valve,could be plugged and not taking care of the blow-by and that is the only way that pressure can escape other than blowing a seal. just a thought.

I have a 1953 M38A1 and I also had a 1954 model and they both have the large #3 Phillips head screws.

Yes they will and they don't require the spacer that was mentioned in the earlier post. but some of the front covers may need to be modified or the pump may rub the cover. or the pump be modified. I have used that style on my first M 38.

Need some ID Help.

The first is a generator and the other is a starter both look to be 12 volt for the early four cylinder engine. The starter looks as though it uses a solenoid to work unlike the military ones with foot control switch and the generator would need a regulator to operate.

Go to downloads and download the manual it has all the tech info you need here is the link for the manual. page 87 of this manual has the answer you ask. it says to cut it at 1/4 inch. These downloads are free to members.

I am rebuilding an engine for a 1948 CJ2A and sent it to the machine shop to be bored and cleaned and when I got it back and was checking things over I found that one of the dowels that hold the main bearing in place was missing and of course the shop didn't know where it went and so I was wondering ...
