Hydrochloric acid AKA muriatic acid will dissolve the zinc if you want it gone. Be mindful of the toxic fumes though.
Is the other half of the hinge still attached to tub? If so, I doubt you will find anything at the hardware store to match. You'll probably have to remove that half to get anything ...

There should be a cage nut in the hat channel there. You bolt from the bottom up and if stock, you shouldn't see a hole there anyway.

I believe you are talking about the anti-rattle clips? They serve a purpose. As you release the clutch (press pedal), the cast iron pressure plate goes into a floating state if you will. These clips help by pulling and keeping that cast piece against the stamped outer piece of the pressure plate ...

3/8 and I used hot rolled. Cold rolled will work but it will make the fab job much harder. HR is plenty adequate for the task.

Ya they really weren't too bad. The hardest part was making the door hardware. I made everything except the door escutcheon plate. Got those from MWM
