If you still have the underwater fording set up, note that the vacuum pump return line goes into the intake. I get oil past the diaphragm seal and it intermittently gets sucked into the intake. Stinky at times.

The oil pump could be off a tooth. My personal experience was when my engine was rebuilt and reassembled the pump was installed 180 degrees off. It had never ran. Sounds like your driveshaft u-joint. I have had them go south on other vehicles and they sound like very angry birds.

I know there is threads on this site that describe length and gauge but the specifics escape me at the moment. I went with those numbers to the local welding shop who made a set for me.
