It's been about 8 years since my restore of my M38A1 was done. My drums were good, so I reused them. The front end had all new wheel bearings.

The brakes were horrible and were not stopping well.

I took the front hubs with drums still mounted to an old school machine shop to have the drums ...

Early M38 Starter and Overrunning Clutch Issue

Last Sat I helped a friend haul a nice original early M38 home.

The owner when starting the M38 said the starter always makes that spinning sound for a while before starting. He just didn't try to fix it.

After working with the linkage and reading about that starter the early AutoLite MBP4301UT ...

You can make some - jeep knuckle pudding.

50/50 (+/-) wheel bearing grease and 80-90 gear oil, mix it well. An old yard sale mixer is good. Then spoon it in the housing.

I mixed some up years ago in an old plastic coffee container. Then I filled the knuckle housing back then. It's not leaking out ...

M38A1 Door Hinge

My windshield is original and the top rod front holders are supposed to be for the M38A1.

I just received what are NOS door to windshield slotted hinges. But when I hold them up to the frame they are hitting the top rod holders.

What is going on and what is not correct?

Well….I have an update.

I went by NAPA the other day and picked up a new 24 volt electro-mechanical flasher. Not the same as the one in the control box but I hooked it up and Ta-Da the turn lights flashed.

But the turn lever light still did not work. :x So this was making me crazy, so I ...

Hummm....more to think about. I pulled the flasher off and plugged it back into only one of the sockets. Then I wired the meter inline with it. When I tried the turn lights I got a constant 24 volts. No off and on action.

Next I ran the meter to the socket of the indicator light. No power in the ...

The 460-461 is usually the wire that goes from the light switch J plug to whatever turn signal control unit you have.

The 22 is the stop light wire. On stock military taillight setups the 22 wire will run to the rear driver’s side for the single stop light.

The 461 is the driver’s side turn ...

If it is off the truck I have rigged up a way to put it under air pressure. I just figured out a series of fittings to attach an air hose to it.

Then I hooked a meter to it and checked to see it it closed the circuit.

If it is on the truck disconnect the wire connection and put your meter leads ...

Later last night, I ran two alligator clips from the turn lever assembly, one from the screw that tightens up the clamp around the steering column and the other from the body of the lever assembly. I connected one to the dash and the other to the duze clip from the instrument panel, still no ...

Good question. I took an alligator clip and ran it from the mounting screw and clipped it to the dash. I can check again and see if maybe I did not get a good ground.

I was reading about testing flasher units on the internet and if they offer no resistance with an ohm meter they are bad. I will ...

NOS Turn Signal Problems

A friend of mine bought a sealed NOS Signal Stat turn signal unit during the Huntsville MVPA convention.

Now it is my job to install it and get it to work. This unit was in amazing shape due to it being sealed up.

I have installed it cording to the diagram. The problem to me seems to be the ...
