My M38 has a Cuno oil filter. I know that the TM says to change the oil every 500 miles using the single-weight oil in the TM. However, with today's oils how often should the oil filter be cleaned, the oil changed, and what are the best recommendations for cleaning the oil filter?
Thanks!

No, The TM says to change oil every 6,000 miles or twice a year. As for the Cuno it says remove the bottom plug and drain every 1,000 miles and remove and clean every 6,000 miles or twice a year at the same time you change the oil. Ref. TM 9-8012 page 54, notes: 2 & 3.
Multigrades are acceptable but I personally prefer the correct single weight.
No special tricks to cleaning the Cuno. Take it off, disassemble it and clean it in solvent, reassemble with a new gasket be careful how you align the lid with the bowl.

Wes,
Thanks! I must have read something else that mentioned 500 miles. I thought that was way too soon but being not as familiar with the single weights and taking into account the manual being written in the 1950s....
You gave me what I was looking for and what I thought would be the way to clean it. Any recommendations on the solvent for cleaning the filter? Thanks again as always!

PD 680 was the standard solvent for over 50 years. There are several bio-degradeables out there as well. For $20 and a 5 gal bucket you can go to your nearest oil distributor and buy the solvent bulk.
