Leaky master cylinder

Post by Jim »

The master cylinder on our M38 is leaky. Are there
couplers that can be tightened, or would you reccommend
a new unit?

If the leak just started, than it is unlikely that the threaded connections are leaking. My M38A1 had a leak and I rebuilt the master cylinder, and wheel cylinders with new rubber seals and honed the bore. The work proved to be a money and timewasting experience. The M/C was leaking badly when the Jeep just sit stationery, but the wheel cylinders were OK. Lost lots of fluid. In the end I still had to buy a new master cylinder and do the remove/replace job again. The parts place had only Taiwanese M/C in stock, I disassambled and checked it, looked good. Painted OD, installed new M/C and new wheel cyls., filled with Ferodo DOT4 fluid, bled and now I have a leak proof brake system. Replace don't rebuild!

Did you install a Wagner brand - made in Taiwan - Master Cylinder? I have one here new in the Wagner box and was wondering if it was of good quality or junk.

The Wagner cyl. is made in the U.S. as far as I know. The Taiwanese m/c did not say anywhere the Wagner name, it was in a white box with no name on it. Quality? Too early to say, it is on for only two weeks, it is OK, so far. It appaered like a good quality cyl. the casting looked like any other normal m/c , bore finish also normal. The rear wheel cylinders also Taiwanese, but the front ones were Wagner. Prices are about 1.5 times more for Wagner. About longevity we should ask other members who did the installation years ago.

Thanks
This is a brand new box that is has all the Wagner Logo and corporate printing and clearly says "made in taiwan".
The USA MC usually have 'made in USA' cast into the side. This has no markings.

Has anyone purchased a new Made In USA MC within the past year?
