Locking hubs

Hi,
Because we are planning to do some 250-350 mile, maybe longer trips this year with my M38A1 I am thinking about buying a lockout hub. I would like to retain the original look of hubs, but if it saves wear on the rest of the front axle why not? Somebody had experience regarding gas mileage on highway with speed between 30 and 45 mph with and without locking hubs? Wich hubs are best?

Hello Zoli,
You should be able to improve mileage about 3 to 6 MPG. First determine which axle joints you have. (weather the axles are 10 or 19 spline and weather they have lock clip or threaded ends.) Then select any quality brand that will fit.

Thanks for your answer Wes, with the help of your reply I have made the decision to fit locking hubs to my Jeep. I did not know about the Dualmatic made hubs, but now I will check them out with the products of the rest of the manufacturers.

The Dualmatics are antiques. Your best choices today are Warn and Superwinch and possibly AVM.

The Cutlass hubs are also old classics. There are only a few modern production hubs available anymore. Also there are no modern hubs produced today that fit the early axle shafts with the threaded ends.

Old classics are fine in many things, but with hubs, because I would like to use them for a long time, I think a new one is better. Parts availability etc. May have to paint it O.D. if it looks too new and high-tech. Most likely I will buy a Warn hub. I think I will stay away from others with plastic parts inside and made in God knows where. I will get one this spring and looking forward to using it. It will make life easier for my Jeep. I do not worry about fuel consumption, but if it is using less with the hubs I won't complain. Thank you guys for your help.

Old dual lever dualmatics, etc...... are cool for low usage drivers and units needing hubs to fit over threaded axels,etc... due to parts availablity[and how expensive they are getting]

For general usage I have tried most everything , and like the Superwinch the best.

I have a few 10 splined jeeps and have used a pile of different hubs through the years and can proudly tell you that my favorite newer type hubs are the superwinch units.
The superwinch hubs change easily when muddy / dirty ... They have an easy 1/4 turn full activation and are tough as nuts! plus they [like the warns] have a shorter length that doesnt hang up on everything.

I bought my first set in mint used shape from Aaron Hocks on g503 and am really happy that I bought them.

The warns are nice but the Superwinch hubs have'em beat.

I have a set of vintage heavy duty Selectro hubs...I bought them off of ebay...I prefer them because they engage/disengage with a 1/4 turn of the outer ring...you can see them on my jeep in the photo gallery under "CaptW"...Wilf

I use superwinch ones, meanwhile i painted them in the same color as the jeep.
