We do not have a complete list of original hood numbers for the M38 that we can publish because so many numbers are unverified.

Also unlike the WWII jeeps we do not have the factory records showing what registration (Hood) number went on what serial number jeep.

Therefore any guess at an appropriate hood number can only be accurate to the 4 or 5 th digit. So the acceptable method of creating a hood number is to use the forst 4 or 5 digits which bring toy close to the date of your jeep's production is used and then the 3 or 4 digits of your jeep's serial number is used. The quantity of numbers vary because the system went from 7 to 8 digit hood number in May 1951.

Your jeep is a September 1951 unit which gets an 8 digit hood number. It would have a 2090xxxx range hood number. 20 represents the vehicle class and 90XXXX is the sequential registration number. So a nice choice for your hood number would be 20904241. This cue's future data researchers that your hood number is a contrived number and prevent the skewering of the data.
