As handbrake still not fixed, I placed jeep into gear to stop it rolling yesterday and noticed it still moves freely. Does this mean I have a gearbox problem?
Appreciate any feedback.

Leave it in high gear not 1st or reverse. when you leave it in a low gear the weight of the jeep can use the multiplication of power you provided with the low gear ratio selection to move the pistons past their top compression positions.

With the tranny correctly in gear, the transfer engaged and the clutch fully engaged the truck relies on the compression of the engine to hold it in place. When you select first, second or reverse the high (low #'s) gear ratio acts like a reduction gear box and doubles the load against the compression of the engine.
A slipping and worn clutch will also allow the truck to roll but you should have already noticed the worn clutch issue when driving it.
