Starter amp Draw when cranking?

Post by dod03-52 »

Does any one know the correct cranking amps for a 24 volt M38? I think mine cranks slowly---don't really know--never seen another 24 volt jeep.
I am like a new bride on her wedding night---don't know what is big or fast !

If you live close to John in Prior Lake south of Minneapolis drive over there and let him listen to it. Are you a Red Bull MVPC Member? If so you have plenty of good ears nearby in the club.

If you have a electronic tach checker the engine should turn about 160 RPM.

If you have a nearby auto electric shop you can have it bench checked against these test numbers.

MBP4301UT Early open nose starter
No Load Test:
At 22 volts
Max 26 amps
Min 3000 RPM
Stall Test:
At 16.0 volts
Max 190 Amps
Min 12 FtLb Torque

MCZ4001UT Late closed nose starter
No Load Test:
At 20 volts
Max 12 amps
Min 3400 RPM
Stall Test:
At 8.0 volts
Max 75 Amps
Min 5 FtLb Torque

Anytime starter operation is questionable one should get out pen and pencil (to record all findings), fully charge the batteries, and disconnect, clean and torque all connections both electrical and mechanical (starter mounting to bell and block). If at this point performance is still questionable

Our M38 starter spins at a lower rpm compare my son's GPW.
The M38 starter is in good condition, and the batteries also.
After comparing som M38A1's in the club ( nekafs) it seems normal that the waterproof M38 starter spins not so fast as the mb's or gpw's.
I do not worry about, the jeep starts fine every time.
