Are the M38A1's used by the USMC more valuable than the Army models?

What im getting at is would it be frowned upon if I painted US Army paint sceme on a USMC jeep?

Depends on who is doing the frowning! A Marine probably would and a super anal purist may also. It would be no worse to paint an Army A1 Marine forest green. What would you do if you found out that your A1 was issued new to the Army and then in about 1962 turned over along with a couple thousand other A1's to the USMC when the Army committed to the M151?

The bottom line will always be, "It's your jeep, your wallet and your choice!"

They are not worth anything so let me haul it away for you.

Now to answer your question, from what I gathered in my restoration journey from Wes and the folks is that the early ones started as Army anyway. So what ever configuration you choose should be based on what history you can back it up with.

For example, mine is a '53 and was Army at some point but I know more of the history as a USMC Jeep so I'm restoring it as USMC.

To switch it's history based on value is cheesy. If you have no history on it you are free to choose but don't steel another persons hood number and serial.

All in all, they really aren't worth much anyway so don't get too caught up in the money thing.

Was your M38A1 a USMC or Army jeep to start with?

I will agree with Wes that it is your jeep and your money, but you should know that you will get comments if you portray a USMC vehicle as Army or vice versa if it is clearly one or the other.

You know, I have always felt that the jeep should be what it was in its previous life. However, since I do not ever plan to have it judged by anyone other than myself, I do not see what difference it makes how it is restored. If you want to paint it pink and say it was attached to the submarine in that silly movie, I say GO FOR IT!!! I am only doing a restore because the jeep I have was in worse shape than I thought it was when I bought it. That doesn't mean I won't try to do it right, BUT, it is still MY jeep, and I can do it any way I want to. As Wes said, "It's your jeep, your wallet and your choice!"

It was a usmc jeep, I could not uncover any other history on it though. I just find the army template's much more appealing to me. As far as my hood numbers go I started with 201 and finished with with my serial #.
I just didnt want to hurt the value, but I love the army versions much better.

I'm just the opposite. I can't stand those white stars 'targets'. A hood number is about the extent of what I want on my Jeep. I guess some people could say the same about the puke green on my USMC. I don't care for the gloss either.
