L134 paint

I'm new to the forum so I may have missed a string or two on this subject. I tried a "search" and scrolled back a dozen or so pages but had no luck. I recently bought a L134, on line, from a couple of states away from Texas, and it is a really nice engine from a 53 Navy Jeep, I believe, but by the time it got to me it had been repainted Chevy Orange. A quick check around town didn't turn up an OD High Heat Rattle can so I am turning to the people who have gone before me. Where do I find the engine paint? Also, will a high heat paint require a primer? When I get the Willys rebuilt it will live with my son, currently on base at 29Palms, and the Chevy orange has got to go. Thanks

You shouldn't need a high heat paint for the engine itself - just the exhaust manifold and head pipe. Shouldn't need primer either, but some prefer to use it on bare metal. Any of the larger advertisers in Military Vehicles Magazine or Supply Line will have the rattle cans in your color. I like the Gillespie paint myself, but that's just me - I buy it from Rapco.
What did you buy, an M38 - since it has an L134?

When you use the Gillespie or AJP's two part urethanes there is no need for a high heat type paint. You should use primer to seal the very porous casting. Except for trailer queens I see no reason to ever paint an exhaust manifold. It is a waste of time and money. If you want a nice looking exhaust system on a driver have it aluminized.

Thanks Matt for the info. I'll go to the suppliers you mentioned. The pedigree on my new engine is a little obscure. It's former owner thinks it is an M38 but I haven't found any numbers on it other than the large raised numbers on the top of the head underneath the oil filter brackets. She has the large oil filter housing and a 129 tooth flywheel ring gear so that is what I am going by for now. Might find something useful if I sand off some orange paint.
