I was looking at my M170 prject in wait and noted that there was no recess for the slave cable in the cowl. It was either removed or never was there. The jeep has all the ambulance parts but I'm beginning to think it was a radio jeep as the grill was modified for adding the radio thingy that needs cooling. I believe either the military or a PO (there were only two) had removed all radio gear and replaced the engine as it is a very early serial # with a cuno filter and two belt accessories. There are also holes to mount the mast on the passenger side. The holes for the stretcher bracket are welded up (behind the driver). There may be other signs but I am not working on this one yet. Still wrapping op the other M170.
Long story to ask, is it possible it didn't have the slave cable recess? If it is suppose to have it does anyone have a spare M38A1 panel with the recess?

Yes slave cable recess belongs on there.

That thingy in the grill is the rectifier for the 100 amp alternator kit. Here's a link to an MRC83 web site which although the jeep is an M38A1 the alternator kit is well illustrated. http://www.hypertools.com/mrc83.html
Here's the MRC87 which uses the M170 platform:

This would be the Cat's Meow" of M170 based radio jeeps:

John Colwell's web site is thick with M170's: http://www.vintagemilitarytrucks.com/M1 ... e_Page.htm

Pic
I will post a pic when I get home. The Jeep had been side swiped from front to rear like some operator had gotten too close to a rock and kept going so there is evidence that a cosmetic repair was performed down the entire side of the jeep I.E. bondo. I looked closely at the inside and outside last night for signs that the recess was patched over or the panel was replaced and it all looks factory installed as if it never had a slave recess; factory spotwelds and no sign of a patch inside or out. Very odd. I hadn't noticed it missing because it looked so smooth and "normal". This M170 is different than my other as there are subtle difference even though the serial # indicate they were built a month apart in 1955. I think this one is a significantly earlier or later version. The support tubes that are welded into and on the back of the jeep for the top bows are a lighter gauge tubing and have splits in them like some sort of provision to help remove the top bows. My other one has heavy gauge tubes with no splits which is probably why I got the bows with it as they were rust welded in. The engine serial # is like MD 17760 (close to that from memory) with a cuno filter and fording valves installed. The PO told me that he had replaced the generator and starter so no clue there. No sign of the firewall having the radio thingy bolted to it but I still suspect this was a radio jeep. The windshield is a different shade of green so I think is a replacement. Seats are ambulance style. Holes are in the bed for the lower racks. Spare tire rack and stretcher dash rack are there though they look as though they are an adder with fresh paint unlike everything else. Tailgate has had the stretcher retainer over the hole cleanly removed; it does have the stretcher support on the top of the tailgate rail. Fenders are the later style. Short old bumper up front. Reel light wire in place with # 39 on it so it looks to have had the reel light. It has white lettering (stenciling) on it but the paint is "greener" like marine green (brush strokes visible) though the rear lift shackles are army style not the marine modified design. I haven't looked at the rear axle to see if it is limited slip. It has been undercoated with tar like stuff that is dried up and peeling.
