Yes, the oil level should cover the bottom of the mesh filter so that air is drawn down through the oil and up into the filter. Oil will also be drawn or splashed into the mesh and will capture dirt and dust. When the engine is shut off, the dirty oil will drain into the cup and the dirt should settle to the bottom of the cup. Change the oil in the cup and remove the grime on the bottom as per lubrication order and the conditions the Jeep is operated in - extremely dusty conditions call for cleaning the air filter daily.

Giacomo,
Have you downloaded the manuals from our download page yet?
Also try to avoid Hypoid oils for the tranny and tranfer. A hypoid type oil is not needed in them but more important is the fact that just about all hypoid oils on the shelf today are GL-5 rated which has chemicals that can cause corrosion issues with copper and brass which is what the synchro's are made up with in the tranny. You can use GL3 or GL4 rated hypoid gear oil or any other quality standard gear oil which by the way includes 50 weight engine oil.

From what manual are these numbers? They are not listed in the ORD 9 SNL G-758 dated Sep 1956 or the ORD 7 SNL G-758 dated 1952 parts list for the M38A1?8332544 or 801711 ?
