I tried searching the data base for this answer but cannot find anything. I have a 1961 M38A1. The oil filter cartridge is different from the civilian jeeps and my local Napa dealer cannot seem to find what I need. I asked him to cross reference the Fram number given on this site and he came up with Napa 1100. The filter is snug going on the center shaft but fits and the seal is a perfect match. Does anyone know if this filter has any down side?
It's about 12 bucks and I would not have to pay postage to get one thru a military dealer.

That is the proper filter...
I have one in my M-38CDN as I have the Military Junior Filter also...
Works like a champ... Have changed the oil regularly and had no problems...
When changing the filter, I have found that a turkey baster works great for removing the old oil from the canister to give a 100% oil change...
Hopr this helps...

Hal, what a great idea! No more oil soaked rags dripping all over the engine.
The local NAPA has the military jr. filter. NAPA 1100 sometimes NAPA Gold 1100 and I think some other numbers too, but they are all the same filter.
I'll go out on a limb here... I think they are all FRAM filters just labeled NAPA.

During the resto it is also convenient to add a drain valve to the bottom of the housing so you can drain the trapped oil quickly and easily without any mess or dripping while the oil is still hot.
