A question about putting in oil

1st of all I have a Fram filter. When you go to put in the engine oil, is it a good idea to dump a quart in the filter housing or just add it all to the crankcase?

I do. It drains down by gravity, but the sooner your engine has full pressure, the better. The orifice in the center pipe that the oil is restricted by essentually is what backs up the oil and gives you oil pressure. All the lube it can get is good in my book. My 2 cents anyway. John

It's not a bad idea and I do that but I think on the F134 the filter system is passive which means it doesn't have to go through the filter to oil the system (that's why the engine will run without a filter in line). However, I don't know if having no oil in the canister will affect overall oil pressure for a short period. Probably goes empty anyway after it sits.

It is a Partial Flow or Bypass type system. All the oil will eventually run through it sooner or later but if you were able to mark the first molecule and the 50th molecule as it left the pump one may go through the filter now and the other 20 pump cycles later. But since it is plumbed in to the oil distribution system parallel to the main oil passageway the restrictor in the filter housing does in fact contribute the necessary restriction to help keep the oil pressure up where it belongs. It's not a full flow system and many of the modern spin on kits do not have a restrictor and they allow the oil pressure to drop noticably.
