I am going to do a front and rear axle service on my M38. Three questions.
1. There are quite a few paper gaskets in the rebuild kit. Do these go on as is or is there some type of sealant required?
2. For the front axle disassembly, TM9-8012 states, "Install a suitable puller over the lip of the shaft drive flange and and pull the flange off the axle shaft assembly." Can someone describe the type of puller they are talking about?
3. Can you recommend a good grease for the bearings. I have some high temp disc brake bearing grease...will that work?
I have some experience working with cars but nothing of this vintage. I have a wheel hub puller for the rear and a wheel bearing nut wrench for the front and just want to make sure I am not short any special tools when I start. Thanks

Download and use the TM 9-1804B Drive chain and Chassis service manual.
You will also find the civvy service manual SM-1002 a much better illustrated guide to axle overhaul then the M38 books.
1-All gaskets are installed dry unless the manual or the gasket manufacturer states otherwise.
2-The rear axle wheel hub needs the striker type heavy service puller. The front drive flange and hubs at each axle end usually pop right off with only a light prying. A case spreader is not mandatory for the differential removal from the housing. The companion flanges will need an impact wrench on their nuts but should tap and slide right off the pinion shaft. Inspect the companion flange seal surface closely. There are often double lip seals available and redi-seals which provide a new smooth sealing surface. On final assembly a light coat of blue RTV on the splines will help seal her up better. A pinion setting gage is mandatory.
3-#2 chassis lube is all that is needed. No fancy high temp disc brake bearing grease is needed. I like to use the water resistant boat trailer bearing lubes.
