CARTER Y-S CARBURATOR OVERHAUL

I´m repairing my Carter Y-S carburator for my M-38 and I have something that I´m not sure how it´s mounted. I´m following the "excerpts from TM 9-1826A/TO 19-75CCA-6" manual to get me trough, and when it comes to subpart 100 (Assembly), on step "e. Install High-Speed Circuit Parts" it states to:

"(5) Install metering rod spring (BB), metering rod diaphragm (DD) (as assembled), and metering rod diaphragm housing (FF) using diaphragm housing lock washer screw (V)."

My doubt is on wich side of the diaphraghm does the spring has to be mounted?. Because it would do much more sense to me to mount the spring on the vacum chamber side as is painted in figure 58 (Type Y-S carburator, high speed circuit) drawing instead of what it is depicted on the exploded view on figure 60 (Type Y-S carburator, model 637S-exploded view-Continued).

But then I ask myself, what does make sense in a carburator when you have it in bits and pieces over the table?.

The original exploded view of the carb in the TM 9-1826A was incorrect. Both vacuum diaphragm springs belong outboard of the diaphragm.


This is my corrected version of that drawing.

Hello Wes,

Do you still have that drawing? I just overhauled my 637S carb and have installed the long spring as depicted on figure 60. on the other side, I do concur that the spring has to be on the outside.

Looks like my BB spring is on the wrong side then. Fortunately I have to open up the carb again to get the body parts plated.
