Am I going to have to drill through my frame

to install my Ramsey PTO winch? I bought the 200L, after several conversations with Herm the Overdrive guy.

no just design the mount to work of the hole in the frame that are designed for the winch.

Cool, thanks. I know I'll have to fabricate the whole mount, I was just hoping to leave the frame alone!
The winch is apparently driven by a cable connected to a lever on the dashboard. Herm says he can switch it to a lever for me, no problem.

The winch wouldn't be driven by the cable would it? Do you mean the pto is activated by a cable?

My bad, yeah, the pto drive unit is cable Operated. It's actually a 200L, I don't know if that makes it more or less compatible.

if you are running the exhaust in the stock location you will have to change it with using the civvy pto. The pto itself well hit the exhaust. I had a civvy pto on my m38, now that I have the correct one I need a new exhaust to put it in the right place.

Yes Wes I did see that.. Just wanted to make sure Deadguy knows that as well. Moving the exhaust makes it easily hit by rocks. Mine is no good any more and this spring I will be putting on the correct exhaust.

What Dan really needs to be aware of is those instructions are for a CJ5 with stock exhaust and not for a M38 with military exhaust. The instructions above and his jeep are two different chassis and two different exhaust systems. The best set of instructions to use with a civvy 200 series Ramsey and civvy PTO on an M38 is the CJ3A installation instructions from Ramsey.

I think I made that perfectly clear in my posts. Alot of people forget they are going to have the change the exhaust for a civvy pto until they go to put it in.

Wes how many winches have you installed on a M38 or M38a1? I am up to 2 on my m38. I was going to originally use a civvy winch and pto. I had a civvy winch all mocked into place and just getting ready to rebuild it just has I found the ramsey 50. I know the pitfalls of trying to put a civvy winch in, as well as the correct winch. The install differences between a cj5, cj3a, m38, and m38a1 well all be very very minor.

How much do I need to re-route the exhaust? You mentioned that it is now more susceptible to rocks and rough terrain? I have a 1952 M38A1

It needs to be moved from over the tranny crossmember to under it. You can probably design a better way than I did. I did something quick just so I could drive the jeep. I used flexable exhaust pipe which made it hand down way to low.

I am very happy for you. You are correct. I have not done an initial winch installation on an M38. I have on the M38A1 I had in 1988 and the CJ3B I had in 1990. Along with a lot of work on them since. This is not about who installed the most winches. It's about sharing the most correct data we can with fellow hobbyists.

You should hold off on acting on any estimated exhaust reworking need to do with your Civvy winch until you have the PTO hanging in position, the drive shaft for it connected to the PTO and winch then compare the results with the civvy vs military exhaust.

I have fitted the Koenig PTO's by re-indexing the PTO itself so the driveshaft gives the exhaust more room on other flat fender CJ's. The last was a CJ2A. So just wait and see what your special installation needs are and tailor them to your jeep and parts.

If you can't re-index the Ramsey PTO body then you may be able to swap for a Koenig or even the shorter reach military PTO.
