Wes,
I didn't ask. The one I recieved was not primed like todays advertised Omix/MDJ.
It was all raw terne-coat steel with the seams having been heated and leaded.

There was a guy in the Utah area building M38 tanks several years ago. We'll have to ask Ron if that's his supplier. It's really an important piece of info for guys needing a tank.

I know the M38 and 'A1 tanks are different, but if there was a US builder that made accurate, quality(maybe even stainless) tanks, I would take this POS Omix tank out (even after all the fitting/modifying I've done to it) and buy one in a minute! They could make a fortune with sub $400 range tanks.

Ok,
I confirmed with RON that his tanks are MD Juan. It's safe to say that they have improved some over the last 5 years and so far Tom M has been the luckiest installer of one.

They mite of made improvements on the M38 tank but the A1 tank is a piece of crap for the amount of change they get for them. Scott O&O

Got that right - 2 days of fitting and modifying and I finally got mine painted and installed today! I'm still thinking about patching my original and putting it back in! It needs some MAJOR patching, but I'm sure it's fixable.

Thought I'd throw in my findings. Do not buy a M38A1 MD Juan tank. They are a mess. The M38 tank from Ron did fit but is 1/4 inch higher than stock. Check your old tank seat clearance between the tank top and rear seat crossmember. It may or may not clear. I had to install the seat rear wheelwell mount anyway, so it worked out on mine. I'd put a whole new bottom in a original if possible. Your call. John

My tank (MD Juan/Omix Ada 'A1) is over 1/2" taller. I had to use 3 pieces of leftover 1/8" welt under the right rear seat foot and 1 piece under the right front foot - the rear seat crossmember is still pretty close.

My old tank was sandblasted about 13 years ago then a radiator shop patched a few holes and coated the inside and painted it. I pulled it out of storage a couple of years ago and the paint was peeling off and it was rusted up and had pinholes everywhere. I figure they didn't get the cleaner neutralized well enough before they painted it. I still might fix it and use it if this repro. tank gets to bugging me enough.

One good thing about the repro tank though - it has a built in reserve

. I noticed when I was fitting the sending unit that the float doesn't go to the bottom of the tank (because it is over 1/2" taller than the original). That's probably what, a half gallon reserve?
