Flat Towing and Steering Issues

Post by mx360guy »

Thanks so much for the pictures. I have bigger wheels and tires on my jeep at the moment and there is alot of play in the steering wheel. I see from some information that. Some adjustments that can be made. How big of a job is it to replace the sterring gear if it is shot? It goes down the road ok but there is alot play.

Thanks again!! :D

Steering and brakes are the two critical systems on the jeep that can hurt you or an innocent bystander if they are fooled with by someone who does not grasp how they operate, how to inspect them, how to adjust then and how to repair them correctly.

You should either have a professional front end guy inspect your steering or get the manuals out and read them till it's clear in your head what to check, how to check it and how to adjust it. It takes a full chapter in the manual to answer your question and that means it takes a lot of typing here to answer the same question. It's a great deal more fair to the members to first learn the system then if there are remaining questions the manual doesn't answer or doesn't make clear enough for you then ask those questions here.

The simple answer to the steering gearbox is remove the steering wheel. Un-clamp the column from the dash. Disconnect the pitman arm. Disconnect the horn switch wires. Unbolt the gear box from the frame.

You'll find several paragraphs that explain how to remove the steering wheel in the manual. You'll find several paragraphs on how to remove the column/gearbox assembly in the manual and a full chapter in the manual to dis-assemble and inspect the whole works.
