Carter w-o carb
Has anyone out there experimented with other carbs on the L134 motor ? I need to rebuild the original but require a quick fix in the shape of a modern commercially available carb just to keep things running in the meantime.

Any of the civvy L134 carbs will work except those off an industrial engine.

Bought a Solex carb off of E-bay, new but cheap, worked perfectly right out of the box. Only a very small adjustment to idle speed. Needed to add a fuel pressure regulator but that was a local auto parts store pick-up. I have the correct carb but it needs a rebuild - a future project (among many).

That can only be determined by you. The original carb outperforms either the Solex or Weber off road. The correct late production overhaul kit for your YS cost $55 and can be on your bench in 3 days. It takes a reasonably savvy mechanic a day to overhaul the carb, install it and adjust it. This requires no modifications to the linkage or plumbing. The overhaul instructions are loaded here on our "Downloads" page for free download. Is it worth the extra outlay ?

The Solex carb also requires no modification for an M38 - original throttle linkage, choke and hand throttle mate right up. Performance issues (as I gather from other posts) for off-road use stem from steep angles of attack - float doesn't allow carb to feed properly ?? or some such. On flat roads, performace is fine. It's not original but a Solex will work.
