Shifter Boot - M38A1

OK, I've got another question. Where does the large clamp go that is placed around the shifter boot on the M38A1? Referring to the attached PIX, when I removed the clamp from the rotted old boot on my transmission it was around area "B", tucked out of sight under the cover. I believe the other M38A1's I've seen were this way. However, the illustration in TM98014 (see Wes, I did look in the manual this time) shows the clamp around area "A". Which is considered to be most correct?

If I am not mistaken there are two clamps, one at A and one at B...

Will need to check the SNL...

Hal is correct. The clamps in the illustration are the "J" upper clamp (tinnerman type) and the "G" lower clamp (regular hose type).

You will find the boot listed in section 0704 of the ORD 9 on page 193 but the two clamps are listed in section 1805 page 327.

"G" Upper clamp, Tinnerman 13/16" ORD# 8330945
"J" Lower clamp 2 5/8" ORD# 111627

They both go above the floor panel. The top small clamp seals the shift stalk and the lower large clamp secures the boot to the tranny shift tower and allows you to adjust the boot bellows tight down against the to floor panel. There are no clamps below the floor panel.

Both the upper (small) and lower clamps on my Jeep were of similar construction. No screw-type hose clamps. Otherwise, what you say makes sense. It should keep the water out of the shifter

Personally, I don't plan to test it.

It actually serves two purposes. It keeps the shifter tower dry and it seals the floor panel keeping fumes and splash outside (under the jeep). When you install the boot do large clamp first while holding boot tight against the floor panel then do the top clamp.
