we'll, after 1 1/2 years of doing a frame off restore and 95 percent finish. i took the old jeep for it's first drive today. the motor sounded real good and didnt drive to bad. something is binding up and making a popping sound when i turn the wheels rear sharp though. i'll jack it up and see if i can tell what's going on. back it out of the garage and notice the front clip is alittle bit more glossy than the tub. so now im trying to decide if i want to repaint the tub or let it be. my oil pressure gage was working then it stop working, so theres something else i'll try to figure out. overall it was a good day!
BTW- to all who answered so many question in the last 1 1/2 years and more in the future. i say thank you!

As with any 4wd vehicle a bit of binding in hard turns with the 4wd engaged will result in binding and popping a bit. In 2wd it should do that.
The usual culprit is turn limit bolts improperly adjusted for the type axle joint you have.
The turn limits are:
Bendix joint = 23 deg's
Rzeppa = 29 deg's
Cardon = 27 1/2 deg's
Also a possible culprit is not using the correct set-up procedure based on early threaded end shafts vs later un-threaded end shaft.
This is not usually covered in the M38 and M38A1 manuals because they never came with threaded end shafts but could easily have had one installed over the years.

well i took the old jeep for a drive further than before. pulled up to the guys house who built my engine. looking the old girl over and notice 90 wt gear oil was everwhere .i think coming from the new rebuilt rear differential. i think from the front seal. so monday i'll call the guy who rebuilt the running gears and let him redo it.
