Engine out

Post by Xamon »

Woo sold that bloody big chevy engine that was in my poor little ford (its a very late canadian one so its a ford.) got almost as much for the engine as I paid for the jeep :D now if I can just find the proper engine to go in... of course I need to fix the frame first, and I have to rebuild the transmision and transfer and the axles.... hmmm maybe the engine can wait unless I find a good deal somewhere. Still YEAH! THE ENGINE IS OUT!

canadian m38's were built for Willys by ford, using Willys parts. NOTHING on the M-38 CDN is a part built or provided by ford. ford just put them together. mine is a Willys and i'll never call it a ford.

That is not a completely true statement. Several Canadian CDN officiandos will strongly disagree with you. Ford of Canada was licensed by Willys to build and fabricate. Late 51 and very early 52 the US Army turned over a group of brand new Willys built M38's to the Canadian Army. Then in the spring Ford and Willys made their licensing agreement. Many folks have confused the early batch of US Army provided M38's with the Ford of Canada production jeeps. Here's a copy of a correspondence between one of our members (Steve Johnson) and Ford of Canada's Historical office:
I contacted the Heritage division of Ford of Canada and here is how they responded. Let me know what you think.
Hi Steve:
Part of the agreement with Willy's was that after production ceased, all records relating to the production (1952 & 1953) of the M-38 & M-38A Jeeps be turned over to the Canadian Military as classified material. What happened to the records after that is anyone's guess, as I have tried through the DND to access any records. We have only the serial number sequences for the units. Under license indicates that Ford was authorised to produce the vehicles here under the Willy's name (but with Ford of Canada on the data plate). As far as I know all the parts were produced here, not imported from Willy's, which was busy producing jeeps for the US Army at the time (the Korean War was taking place at the time). Of course, Willys provided all the design specifications for the jeeps.

It's a two way street Frank. Ford started production of it's own design M151 jeep in 1959 and being unable to keep up with the Army's demand for the jeep they licensed Kaiser to build them in the early 60's for a year or two.

Those owners don't call theirs Ford, they call them Kaiser M151's.
