The term NOS (New Old Stock) only means it came off the shelf unused. Could be a NOS aftermarket, could be an NOS with the FSN that was listed for the G758/MD but was not original Willys/Kaiser type. Original factory caps were Eaton and Stanton.

It was definately military NOS - brown paper stock box and wrapped in brown resin paper and either coated in heavy dried up oil or a light coat of cosmoline- sealed with a label with the stock number and all - don't remember what it said though. I'll look closer at the cap a little later when I go to the shop. I'm not particularly interested in being 100% original - just functional.

When you look in the Army supply manuals you'll find that that stock number cap was used on quite a few different make and model trucks. It's an Army generic shelf stock unit.

That's kindof what I was thinking - maybe I can work up a chain clamp so I can hook it to the overflow pipe to make it look original.

Security chain

Post by timjuhl »

I've done some checking around and so far all I've found that comes close to the original chain in size and shape is made of brass, not steel. Here is a photo showing the original chain on the right and the brass chain I found on the left. Since you paint the chain OD anyway I've decided the brass is good enough for me.

BTW-if you are looking for this stuff in your local hardware, it is called "Plumber's Chain."

Won't have to worry about it rusting either! Are you doing a factory resto. I think brass and od look good together myself.
