Throttle return spring

This is where the throttle return spring is hooked up-just strung on what I think is a vent line. Does anyone know where it is actually supposed to go?

On a A1 I think the spring goes from the bellcrank on the side valve cover down to the square headed plug in the oil gallery. The plug had a hole drilled through the square. ( I think) I'd have to go look. John

Hi,
Wrong spring, wrong location. It actually hooks to the oil galley plug on the side of the block below the lower bell crank of the throttle linkage. There is a cross hole drilled in that plug for the spring. It then extends upward to connect to the bell crank. I don't have a picture to post here, but I am sure Wes does.

Nothing. The valve cover is a very glossy black and it was a very bright cloudy day when I took the photo.

The seal on the oil filter is leaking. I have a new one on the way.
I think you guys have the wrong spring in mind, this is the spring on the bottom of the carburetor on the other side!

The M38A1 does not use a spring on the carb side of the engine. Whomever added that spring was an ardvaark! :wink:

Previous owner probably had it on there for a reason but that reason was to bandage something else that was not right. So I'm just saying, with just taking it off, you might see some other ailment show up.

Well, there has been alot wrong with this vehicle, and I've steady, over the course of the last year and a half, replaced or had rebuilt almost everything. I'm not saying something wonted break, but at least I'm running out of stuff that can. I had the remove the engine, ship it back to the rebuilder, and then reinstall it. That was done by a few guys at a local jeep shop, and the guy who pulled the engine isn't the guy who put it back in, so they might well have done it.

Alright, took the spring off. It looks like the throttle lever on the side of the carburetor has a little bit of play, and the spring was to "tighten it up" The lever is in no danger of coming off, and the play is minor. Is this normal? Here a pic I took of it in it's normal, relaxed position, and then of me pushing it in slightly (the way the spring had it).

well, apparently I've answered my own question. I took it out, and it was revving high, and staying high. I pulled it in my garage and checked the carburetor, and apparently the throttle lever doesn't return all the way to idle without that spring.
