Rifle?

What rifle was used by the Infantry in the Korean War ? And is it the one usually mounted in the M38 rifle holder?

Same issue as WWII- Garand, Carbine, BAR,ect.

although I have a rifle rack on my M38 all the period pictures I have of M38s in service only have the brackets on the windshield and no rack

Ken,

If I am not mistaken, the rifle rack was added on in the field. The brackets were mounted at the factory.

Anyone can jump in with further information.

Sorry I saw it in a post before and I cant find it again . But what was the proper windshield mount rifle for a M38 CDN in korea?

They all fit the windshield mounted scabbard. But keep in mind that M38's were not the primary jeep in use from 1950 thru 53 in Korea. The MB and GPW were still primary and there weren't a lot of left over scabbards for the few M38's that made it there starting in 52 and the even fewer M38A1's that started showing up in the spring of 53. These newer jeeps with their odd 24 volt systems were usually kept in the rear and at HQ's. As new type units they were simply an extra PITA for the supply and motor pool NCO's.

Sorry to point this out but the M14 did not come along into US military service until many years after the Korean War, being adopted in 1957. It was the M1 Garand on the front line, mostly ww2 stock weapons although the government did contract new batches of rifles, largely from International Harvester.

During the Korean era the 762 x 51 NATO (308win) round was still being developed and was not yet being fielded. 30-06 (30 cal) was still the primary battle rifle and machine gun round of the US military until the mid to late 50s

During this time the Canadians as well as all other commonwealth forces were still fielding the No 4 enfield as their standard battle rifle, with the Bren LMG and Sten SMG as well. As far as I know no other specific rifle mount was designated for the Enfield, with the same mount as the Americans being used.

I know it's not totally correct, but I have a M151 mount in my M38A1, with a Garand I put in it sometimes.

Did the 38A1 have any sort of rifle rack system? Looking at the manuals, the answer appears to be no, but I know the manuals do not cover everything.

I've heard that what I used was the military M-series vehicles upgrade, and I think it came out when you still had M38A1s in use, so technically, it would be correct.

The M38A1, unlike the MB/GPW/M38, did not leave Willys with any fittings for mounting hand carried weapons or scabbards. The late M series that Dan posted is what was usually used. That same vertical mount system was often used in the old M37's as well.

I have seen pictures of jeeps with No 5s, and they don't look bad. Considering the No5s started being built in 1945, you can put them in your MB and on. I'm not sure how many canadian units used them, but if anyone were to question you, ask them where theirs is lol.
