M38A1 Battery Tray and Drain Tubes

Post by STXM38A1 »

A posting on the G503 M38A1 site has some excellent reference pictures for the M38A1 battery trays and drain tubes.

I believe John Bizal at Midwest Military has them.

Hoses

No, MWM does not have them. I priced out the tooling to get them made and almost had a heart attack. Not in my plans anytime soon.

This was also discussed a few months ago on a forum, either this one or the G, and I managed to make the firewall thru hose out of irrigation plastic hose found at True Value Hardware. I heated the hose with a heat gun and got to fit well enough for my needs. Fortunately I had the original battery tray hoses and the copper tee fitting. Although the hoses were fragile, I managed to get them on and then reinforce the outside with epoxy. They will still come off but should not break up on me.

If I recall correctly, the previous post on this described a process of using copper elbows, a 90 and a 45, and the irrigation tubing. The elbows made the bend for the tray and were soldered in place.

The only down side was I had to buy an entire roll of the tubing to get the three feet I needed. My neighbor now has the remainder in his yard. Not expensive stuff though.
