Axel Flange nut and washer - M38

Post by DanS »

In looking at the M38 parts diagram, I notice that the front axels do not have the flange nut and washer, unlike the MB/GPW. Was this deemed not necessary after the WWII jeeps and if so, will the axels from the MB/GPW work with or without the nuts? Thanks everyone.

Hello Dan,

The front axles with the threaded ends were pre-CJ3A/M38. You can use them and just apply the principals listed in the very well worded civilian CJ manual SM-1002. Read the chapter on the front axle in my photo album:

Only real issue is the use of locking/free wheeling hubs. With the threaded axles you must use the very early hubs which are impossible to find. The later hubs can be used by sawing the threaded nub off but then you loose control of end play.
