M38 Floods too quick on start?

Post by joebuck »

Hey Everybody. Just bought a fully restored M38 52' and we are in love with the jeep.. Purrs like a kitten. Previous owner fully restored this jeep and we are honored to have bought it from him. he had it 24 years!!.

Quick question ( and i am not a good gear head)....when starting the jeep, it is prone to flood out if i am not careful. Three or four pumps on the gas pedal and it quits. I have to flutter the gas pedal and play with it to get it cranked....or i can turn it over and let it idle for 2 minutes and then l=flutter and go. runs great after that and cranks back up nice. just seems to be running to rich....???

any advice? carb adjustment? thanks

Download the operators manual from our downloads page and read the "How to start" section. The M38 does not have a mechanical accelerator pump. Pumping the pedal during start does nothing except move the throttle linkage. The accelerator pump on M38's is vacuum operated. Next start pull hand throttle control out 1". Pull choke control out all the way. Leave the pedal alone and hit the starter switch.
