12v starter part numbers.

Post by M170Brian »

OK guys. I'm new here but not new to MV's or Jeep. I recently picked up a molested M170 with the stock 134/t-90 in it. Problem is it has been converted to 12v. With everything being 12v I am leaving it alone for now and need to replace the starter. There are about 10 part numbers out there and none of them seem to be in stock. Am I missing something? Anyone have an accurate part number for any major chain? Or maybe tell me where I can source one? Anyone got one laying on a shelf? :D

Any of the starters for the 12 volt CJ3B and CJ5 or CJ6 will work. These would be 57 thru 71 F134 powered CJ's. They are not going to be cheap. $250 to $375 off the shelf. Best bet is to drop yours at the rebuilder and pay $200 or less. There are also the so called hot Nipponese adaptable starters that a lot of folks rave about for $375 & up.

The correct original Prestolite is MDU-7004 with a 9 tooth Bendix Folo-Thru drive. This is meant to be used with the 129 tooth flywheel. I know many folks will tell you all F134's came with the 129 tooth flywheel but they are wrong. The first F134's were used in trucks and wagons as early as 1950 and had the 124 tooth flywheel. Over the years a lot of mix and match has occurred so I would advise verifying what you have inside the bell housing when selecting a new starter and/or drive.

NAPA number when you ask for a starter for a 70 CJ5 F134 12 V is PME 25014

You can determine your flywheel by using this old illustration I created several years ago:

Thanks Wes. I found that link online from napa as well but if you try to purchase it online or order it from the local store it will not allow it. Last one told me the part number was no good. We are pretty rural here, not sure we have a rebuilder. I'll take a look.

It helps to include your location in your signature block or Username block. You can add that info in your profile page.

If you have a local parts store (auto, truck or tractor) just ask who their rebuilder is.
