What to stand the M38a1 power plant on?

Post by linx310 »

I am getting ready to remove the complete power plant (motor, radiator, transfer and tranny cases) from my M38a1.

What is the safest way to put the power plant on the ground? Should I put it down on some boards?

Is there a special stand to hold the entire power plant?

Put the transfer on the floor and support the ENTIRE lower surface of the oil pane with layers of wood to set the engine level longitudinally. If your 134 has no skid plate on the pan be very careful.

Or weld some angle together in a "T" with vertical arms added at the outboard ends of the top of the "T" with adapters to bolt to the engine side mounts. Then you can go vertical to the tranny/transfer junction at the rear of the "T" and pick up an overdrive cover plate bolt.

The oil drain sticks down a bit so your blocks have to clear it. I used two sets cross-ways and another out the front of the engine. You could make a custom carved base to more fully support the pan. Blocks under the trans mount support the rear. I also used load binder straps to hold the engine steady on the benchtop - removed for the pic.
