NOS M38 gas tank retaining strap with anti-squeak

Post by keats »

From what I can see, there are only two materials used in the aftermarket for anti squeak for the gas tank and retainer strap:

1) webbing material
and
2) felt material

A friend of mine currently into an accurate M38 restoration showed me a NOS M38 gas tank retainer strap he has. From the pictures it can be seen that the anti-squeak material is more like roofing felt tar paper than webbing or plain felt material. This would be more water repellent also. Maybe 1/8 tar paper would be a better choice for anti-squeak.

Its like the same stuff for the radiator but thinner. Rolled roofing material would work also buzzzz

Interesting, it looks like a variation of a building material called

Homasote.http://www.homasote.com/

Considering the military applications of Homasote maybe they are the source.
