I do not recall any chains on the M38 radiator caps. Probably added to your cap in the field or your cap is from a different application. There are no chains listed in the supply manuals and if look at the illustrations in your TM 9-8012 there are none. The cap appears in figures 68, 39, 37, 32, & 31.

There are no chains listed in the supply manuals and if look at the illustrations in your TM 9-8014 there are none. The cap appears in figures 59, 53, 52, 37, & 36 without any chain. Also in TM 9-8015-1 Engine & clutch manual figures 1 & 2 show the cap clearly without any chain.

The ones with chains are later replacements. I have the same cap on my 'a1 and my deuce. But yes, if you have a chain, hooking it to the overflow tube works great.

There are no chains listed in the Dutch(M38A1(Nekaf)) manuals and if look at the illustrations there are none.

I have a 1952 M38A1 without chains. Must be a later model.

Late or early the documents all show no chains M38/M38A1/M170 radiator caps. Obviously at some point in the field some chains were installed. By which service we don't know. Most likely the result of an MWO or TB requiring the caps to have chains added in the field to all wheeled vehicles since I have not found any M38/M38A1 specific MWO's or TB's on the subject. Bottom line factory class resto gets no chains. Motor pool class is your choice. If you intend to have the vehicle judged be prepared to be asked to provide documents or photographic evidence that they were installed in the field during the period your motor pool resto represents.

My 1956 and 1958 Nekafs do both have radiator caps with a small chain connected to the overflow tube. The one from 1958 comes straight from the army and even has a pressure release knob on it.

Generic replacements always seemed to have the chains. It is simple sound marketing / engineering technique to ensure each cap meets the widest set of applications.
