Grooved x flat spring leaves

Hello gents, the question goes to m38 x m38a1 spring leaves: when did grooved type spring leaves first appeared on M series jeeps? My m38c has flat type leaves on the front, while the rear ones are grooved (channel type leaves). Thanks, nice regards, Claudio

Willys / Kaiser did not install any grooved springs at the factory on the M38/M38A1. The grooved springs were procured as replacements from a different manufacturer by the Army.

Hello Wes, Thanks for the hint. Do you have the same opinion about late produced M170s , m38a1 and m606 released during the sixties? Coincidently or not all vehicles from this period exported over to us had these kind of springs. Maybe same as late m38a1s ordered by USMC? Thanks again and have a nice Sunday

Yes. Consider production of the M38A1, M170 and M38A1CDN ended in 1970 and that these grooved springs made their appearance essentially as aftermarket contracted items by the Army in the 70's I see no reason to think they were ever installed by Willys.

The M606 series is a different issue with production based entirely on the civilian line and lasting through the 70's. Answers on these models would be easier to find on the CJ web sites.

That would make one axle's springs original and one aftermarket. Which is which on your CDN?
