For those who may want to take a look, there is a more detailed process over on my project page.

The new unit came with a Packard setup and I set out to convert it to Douglas.

The first setup looked like this. Thankfully, Wes very aptly pointed out that this setup would effectively ground the pin to the housing.

So I set out trying to find another variant of this setup, adding a rubber insulator to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found that no matter how I arranged it I kept running in to a couple of problems with this method:
A) that the pin isn't secured to the housing and will push into the housing when you try to put on the rubber piece and
B) even when this setup is installed, it doesn't leave enough of the pin exposed to connect the connector.
Which has brought me back to....

The original setup. Thanks to the folks over at Vintage Wiring of Maine who leave the harness end open to adaptation while including the parts. I am now wondering about making this one connection into a Packard style.
Thoughts? Has anyone come across this before?
