WTB - M38 ignition wires (4)

Post by capescw »

Like it says, I'm extremely frugal (cheap) :D

Anybody willing to part with a set of M-38 ignition (plug) wires?

PM if yes!

(And I already know I can buy new ones)

Bill, Are you without any original shielded wires or just need a better set?

New set

Wes,

Been using a MB type distributor, now have a 24v waterproof (Original) M-38 distributor with no wires. I've refurbed the dist and would like to use it, but have no "wires", only a partial M38A1 set (3) with straight ends, instead of the proper "curved" ends.

Bill
What's your coil plan for running 12 volts with the M-series distributor?

Stop the press...

Seems the wires I have are NOT M38 so Bill is still on the hunt for some. Any idea what I do have here?

Plans

Two concepts, Hide the actual 12v coil, possibly in cowl battery box, make the HV lead look like either the pressure fitting or the original 24v feed.

Other approach, I think some of the newer 12v coils just might fit inside the dist, not sure yet.

Whichever, it WILL work when I'm through! As usual, I'll put the pix on my website. I am going to stick with a disguised 12v system.

I still think this is the best site re Mil jeeps - Kudos to all who participate.

Bill
Just an FYI,5 of the 6 M37 wires are the same length as the 3 long M38 wires.(right angle on both ends).M38A1 and M715 wires are the same(straight on both ends).Just another source when flea marketing.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info! Maybe I'll get lucky at the Chester show in Connecticut on June 13th.

AND I might still get lucky here (Fingers crossed)

Bill,

Some of the late model single coil per cylinder cars have coils that will fit in the M series distributors. One of our members has already done this and has a photo album full of the switch over photos. There are also 12 volt coils made that are the same dimensions as the original 24 volt units. These are out of production but still pop up for sale now and then.

As for ID'g plug wires many will interchange or work but original factory installations differed significantly between the M37, M38, M38A1/M170, and the M151.

M38:

7528173 Cyl # 1 23 3/4" long.
7528174 Cyl's # 2, 3, & 4 19 3/4" long.

Both ends are 90 deg elbows.

Image

M38A1/M170:

8328449 4 Ea. 29" long.

Both ends straight.

Image

M37:

Early engines up to eng sn 25519:

7528172 - 6 Ea. 24"

Eng sn's 25519 & up:

8328040 - 5 Ea. 24"
8328039 (superceded by 8741873) - 1 Ea. #1 cyl 22"

All three above are 90 deg. elbow one end and straight the other end.

Image

M151 Series:

11660569-1 2 Ea. #3 & 4 cyl's.
11660569-2 1 Ea. #2 cyl.
11660569-3 1 Ea. #1 cyl.

As you can see below these are very short running 11" to 16".

Image

M715:

11641027-1 Cyl # 1 18.5"
11641027-2 Cyl # 2 20"
11641027-3 Cyl # 3 22"
11641027-4 Cyl # 4 24"
11641027-5 Cyl # 5 29"
11641027-6 Cyl # 6 31.5"

All cable ends are straight.

Bill, see here what our friend Jose did about hiding a 12V Coil in the waterproof dist.
http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php? ... highlight=

Ingenious? Yes. Did he confirm proper function? No.
Surely there are easier ways but this was an interesting idea.

12V

Post by TomM »

Bill,
The coil pack from the previous link looked interesting. Also if you look into the summit racing catalog there are some high voltage coil tower extensions for the race crowd. It may be another small piece of the puzzle as you make the change to the waterproof setup.

I use these wires on my m38 and they work fine, and are relatively cheap. http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/m38 ... e-set.html
