Which gasket?

Post by 32sbct »

I have an M38 with a Willys chain drive engine. I am using the M38 front engine plate which fits with no issues. My question is which front engine plate gasket should I use, the one for a chain drive engine or the one for the gear drive motor which matches the M38 front engine plate? I have both, or does it not really matter either way? Also, is there any sealant used with this gasket or are they used dry. Thanks.

Most of us seldom have both engines opened up alongside each other. It would be easier if you provided us with 4 photo. One of the entire front face of the block without the plate installed, one of the back side on the plate you intend to use and one of the front side of each of the gaskets.

For example here's the M38 plate from it's rear side:

Here's the M38 plate from the front side:

Here's the MB plate from the front side:

May I ask which gasket you ended up using with this set up and if it worked out for you? I am in a similar situation that I need to do when iI get to the engine part of my project.

I used the one for the chain drive engine. I won't find out if there are any issues until next year. I'm still putting the rest of the engine back together and I'm running out of decent weather here in Pa. I hope to get the engine installed in the chassis this year but that will probably be it till spring.
