Question about oddities

Post by Saberr »

Got a few oddities found on my m38a1,
One is that there is an extension welded to the body mount on the frame, anyone have any ideas why ? Not a bubba job, and its straight from the core.

The other oddity is the exhaust system, in the tm and other pics ive seen, the box part is always at the back, in mine its in back of the over drive. It also ends right before the bumper on the inside. You guys seen that before on m38a1 ?

Sry about link, still can't get pictures to upload from my comp into posts.

Your exhaust looks to be a Bubba job. The military exhaust components are not held together with tail pipe clamps.

The extension is original. It was meant to support the weight of the spare tire when mounted on the side. Some variants such as the M38A1C required this when a recoilless rifle was mounted on the jeep. There have been other threads that will have further info here and on the G503 forum.

I did forget to say that all the frames came standard with it. I believe it started in 54 or 55

Ahh thats good to know. Mines a 64 usmc m38a1,not a recoiless. Curious because i have a 52 frame and it doesn't have that extension, and iv'e not seen that on a regular m38a1 frame before, Huh go figure i missed something :). I would agree on the exhaust being a bubba job, but don't think so. I am only the 2nd owner, and the first only put front lockers on (go figure, already had front lim diff.). The frame is horribly bent on the gun cross member. Maybe its a bubba army job, to keep it running, or it was the first owner. The welds and alignment are just really good, only reason why wondering. Hey maybe my bubba was a very clean and neat bubba :). It was used as an air drop trainer in the end of its service life. Truly amazed that a bent gun cross member is the only real issue with it, considering it probably has more air miles than me and a lot of other people here :).

Just as a side note, is there any other difference in early frames and late production ? I know the extended front right body mount, the front radiator hinge to bolt, front bumber extended/rounded, and rear bump was re-enforced. Also the shackles were changed. Any thing else ? Anything with different measurements?

Saberr,

Follow the directions in our tutorial on how to load photos on posts which is the first sticky entry on our Photo albums request and problems board. Please insure you post only photos that are of reasonable file size. The photos I posted for you are much to large

Your exhaust is totally bubbasized.

The extension on the body mount is common to M38A1 frames Jan 55 & up. Frame PN 805715 came without the extension. Frame PN 809121 came with the extension. If pre Jan 55 jeep was field converted IAW MWO ORD G758-W3 then they got the extension.
